What is mathematical oncology?

The integration and application of mathematical and computational models to better understand and predict cancer initiation, progression and treatment.

What is the purpose of this conference?

To support the growing momentum in our field of Mathematical Oncology, we feel the time is ripe to establish a new regularly recurring (annual or bi-annual) meeting that will provide an international venue for collaboration, integration, training and synergy for our exciting fusion of disciplines.

When will the conference be held?

March 11 - 14, 2020. Click here to be notified (by email) when registration opens.

Where will the conference be held?

The conference will be held on the beautiful island of Maui: the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands.

Who are the conference co-chairs?

Kristin Swanson (Mayo Clinic) and Sandy Anderson (Moffitt).

Who is on the organizing committee?

Claire Tomlin (UC Berkeley), Jennifer Couch (NIH/NCI), Nastaran Zahir (NIH/NCI), Shannon Hughes (NIH/NCI), Robin Brown (NIH/NCI), Maciej Mrugala (Mayo Clinic).

Purpose

We are excited to announce the inaugural Mathematical Oncology meeting in March 2020 in Maui, Hawaii (http://mathematical-oncology.org/mathonc20/). This international meeting builds on the robust legacy of growing initiatives related to the application of mathematical and computational approaches in cancer biology and clinical oncology including:

To support the growing momentum in our field of Mathematical Oncology, we feel the time is ripe to establish a new regularly recurring (annual or bi-annual) meeting that will provide an international venue for collaboration, integration, training and synergy for our exciting fusion of disciplines. We look forward to seeing you in Maui to launch the next chapter in Mathematical Oncology as we leverage the power of mathematics to drive forward positive change for patients with cancer.

Sincerely,

Kristin & Sandy

Agenda

Structure of the meeting

The meeting will be a mix of didactic and abstract sessions. Didactic sessions seek to provide overviews to allow clinicians to engage the math and for the modelers to engage the holy grail challenges in oncology. The abstract sessions will provide candidate solutions related to those challenges.

Each abstract session will be pre-ambled by a tutorial/didactic session providing a foundation in the area. Example (but not inclusive) themes of didactic sessions include: Intro to Mathematical Oncology, Intro to Drug Delivery (PK and PD - pharmacometrics), Intro to Imaging-based Modeling and Radiomics, Intro to Biomarkers, Intro to Evolutionary Therapy, Intro to Tumor-Stromal Interactions, Intro to Genomics and Intracellular Dynamics.

An exciting addition to this meeting is the "Dolphin Cove" event. This is a forum to encourage novel ways to "sell" math oncology to broader communities. There will be free time to meet with teams before the final pitch competition on the last day.
